Biosecurity and AI; Nucleic acid governance
We provided RAND with a gift of $756,000 to be spent at the discretion of RAND president and CEO Jason Matheny. Matheny has allocated this funding to support the RAND Center on AI, Security, and Technology and its research and analysis on U.S. biosecurity risk governance, including implementation of nucleic acid synthesis screening frameworks; advancing gene synthesis screening infrastructure such as sequences-of-concern database architecture and know-your-customer standards; strengthening EU and UK biosecurity frameworks and their interoperability with U.S. requirements; and building China-U.S. dialogue on shared norms for AI-enabled biological research governance.
