Nucleic acid governance
We provided $164,000 to the International Gene Synthesis Consortium to support the work of the Sequence Biosecurity Risk Consortium (SBRC). The SBRC is an industry-led effort that brings together nucleic acid providers, screening tool developers, policymakers, and scientific experts to develop detailed risk-classification standards for nucleic acid sequences, with the ultimate goal of enabling enforceable screening standards. We expect this grant to contribute to our broader goal of securing nucleic acid synthesis by laying the foundation for evidence-based and enforceable regulation. While the SBRC’s standards are initially intended for voluntary adoption by synthesis providers, they are designed to be practical, scalable, and policy-relevant and expected to inform and accelerate future regulatory uptake.
