Epoch AI

We provided Epoch AI with an $85,000 grant to expand their database of biology AI models, with a focus on biological design tools, by tracking new releases and their technical specifications and safeguards. This builds on their 2024 work, which found that only a small fraction of these tools include adequate safeguards. The updated database will cover models released through August 2025 and identify high-risk applications. Epoch will also invest in automated tools to improve the efficiency of the Bio-AI Model Observatory’s data collection, analysis, and validation. We expect this database to support policymakers advocating for stronger oversight of dual-use biotechnologies.
