Biosecurity Research Team

Nucleic acid governance

We provided $110,000 to a biosecurity research team to identify potential ‘chokepoints’ for managing access to dual-use biotechnology capabilities. This study will review protocols in virology and reverse genetics to identify materials and equipment that are distinctly used in research with pandemic-capable viruses. The study will also assess contract research organizations (CROs) and cloud laboratories that enable people to outsource difficult steps in the construction of engineered biological threats.

We expect this project to inform our internal prioritization between various biotechnology governance interventions and to provide an evidence base for the broader biosecurity field.
